Not only is adopting a pet from the Vieques Humane Society a way to truly make a difference in the world ... it's also also quick, easy, inexpensive, and you don't even need to be on Vieques to make it happen!

Either visit us on Vieques (great vacation spot!) or browse through our online photo album of dogs and cats in need of a home. Also you can visit our list of adoptable animals on Petfinder as well.

If you are interested in an animal give us a call or email us. We would like to get to know you a little because we want to make sure our animals are going to the right homes and we bet you want to know that it is a great match as well. And when you mail in your application that we send you, a letter of recommendation from your vet would be great. If you don't have any animals yet, just an interview on the phone is fine.

If you do decide to adopt from us then we need to get the animal to where ever you are and this is how we do it:

If we can find people on Vieques that are flying back up to the states we often times send animals along with them. If not, we prefer to ship with Continental. So, either way, your animal can fly to where you are. If the animal is 20lbs or less they can go in a soft carrier and go in the cabin with the traveler. If they are over 20lbs they have to go under in the designated cargo hold for animals. (Don't worry, it is temperature regulated between 50F-70F). When shipping with Contintental, they do not need to travel with a person. The difference is in the expence, but if you want your animal right away, shipping is the best choice.

So, if you choose to ship with, say Continental, what you would do is call their Live Animal Desk, (1 800 575-3335) and make a flight reservation and they charge you depending on the weight of the animal and carrier. We would get the animal to San Juan for you on time to get on that flight.

SO, you are wondering what the cost looks like to adopt?? It is not bad at all when you look at what it costs to adopt a pure bred and you are saving a life at the same time!!! Here is the break down:

-Adoption fee: (covers spay/neuter, all vaccines, deworming medicine, health certificate, rabies certificate, and any medications needed) $ 85 for dogs and $ 75 for cats. GREAT deal)

-Transport to Airport: We have to get the animal to the main island by ferry and then we have to have the animal transported 1 ½ hour drive to airport and this costs $ 62. If you are taking the dog personally and the dog weighs less than 20lbs, you can take them on the smaller planes for $10.

-Airline Fee: This depends on what airlines and if the animal is being brought home with somebody or just being shipped. Example, American Airlines charges $80 for carrying an animal in the cabin and $100 for cargo. Continental starts at $189 and increases with the weight of the dog.

Basically, the cost depends on the particular situation which we can figure out together!!!If you have any questions about the way our process works please don't hesitate to contact us.

When you adopt from the Vieques Humane Society you are getting a friend for life who will stick by you as a loyal, loving and strong pet. These dogs and cats are so appreciative of love and attention and they know they are getting a better life when someone like you chooses to rescue them. The animals say thank you!!!!

Email us or call us! We would love to here from you. Click HERE for our adoption application. If you are seriously considering an animal from our shelter and we are not able to meet you in person we also ask for a short letter of reference from your vet in addition to the application. The spanish version is coming soon!

You can see where we are located here on this map. We are off the South East coast of Puerto Rico.

Emergency Adoption Story of the week!!

I need a home fast...here is my story...

My name is Joe and I am a great dog. I am friendly, but I don't like to be at the shelter and I need more room. People don't really like big dogs here and my chances to get adopted are slim. I am sweet and like to take walks to the beach and play. I am about 60lbs and I am lanky and of course quite handsome. PLEASE check me out!!
