Welcome to the Vieques Humane Society and Animal Rescue.  Thank you for considering adopting a pet from our shelter.  This application helps us determine if the animal and the adopter are a good match for each other. We appreciate your kindness that may save a life, but we want you to understand what taking care of that life entails.

Many of the animals at this shelter are strays, have been abandoned, or are from abusive or negligent homes.  VHS rarely has the background information on the health and/or temperament of the animal. Under stressful or new situations the animal may exhibit temporary undesirable behaviors such as anti-social behavior, hyperactivity, excessive barking, etc.  This is normal and when given enough time to adjust, most animals adopted from our shelter have adapted well to their new environments.

All animals have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and wormed as we make an effort to only place healthy animals.  However, certain types of health problems often manifest themselves after the animal is in a new home situation. For these reasons we can’t guarantee the health of any animal or be held responsible for any expenses incurred by the adopter.  Adopting an animal is a large commitment (financial and time wise), and we only adopt to people who understand this and are wholeheartedly willing to make this effort.  Cats and dogs require annual vaccinations, monthly heartworm treatments, and occasional vet visits in case they become sick or injured. 

As a potential adopter, please be aware that most of the animals up for adoption will need an abundance of patience, understanding, time, and training to turn them into the ideal pet for your household. 

VHS is a non-profit organization and we ask an adoption fee of $85 for dogs and $75 for cats plus any travel expenses.  We thank you again for considering a Vieques Sato/Gato. These animals are known for their undying love, loyalty and companionship due to adopters like you that give them a second chance at life.

 

 

 

 

In order to be considered as an adopter today, you must:

·     Be 18 years of age or older

·     Have identification showing your present address

·     Have knowledge or consent of the homeowner or landlord

·     Understand that this application is the property of VHS and that VHS has the full authority to approve, delay, or deny your application.

·     Understand that failure to answer any question completely and precisely will result in a delay or refusal of your application

·     Understand that the animal’s welfare must be our primary consideration.

 

Please understand that this transaction is an adoption, not a purchase.  Therefore, VHS can and will monitor the care our animals receive, and VHS may reclaim the animal at any time if you fail to provide the animal with the care we have specified in the adoption agreement.  At any time you decide that the adoption is not successful VHS must be notified immediately. In these rare cases, VHS will provide new placement for the animal, please do not attempt this on your own or without notifying our staff.
